Today marks the 50th anniversary of the date that legislation creating the Medicare and Medicaid programs was signed by President Lyndon Johnson. President Johnson signed the legislation in Independence, Missouri with President Harry Truman by his side. Soon thereafter, President Truman became the first enrollee in the Medicare Program. His wife, Bess, became the second.

As we look to the future, it is important to recognize this milestone, acknowledge the success of the first 50 years, and look ahead to all that still needs to be done.

Certainly, challenges remain in Medicaid but there is no doubt that the program has played a critical role for millions of Americans. It is part of our nation’s safety net, providing care for the most vulnerable. It has led to innovations in healthcare financing and delivery. It has helped maintain critical safety net hospitals and other healthcare providers available to treat countless Americans.

While we have seen many successes, there continues to be areas that need reform to ensure the program is properly financed, proper access is available, and quality is improved.

As a firm with a mission to find solutions to the challenges of the financing and delivery of public healthcare for the underserved and economically disadvantaged populations, we are pleased to work with our clients, policy makers, and other stakeholders to ensure Medicaid continues to evolve and improve for the next 50 years.
